Major grants for specific, larger and/or longer-term projects are highly dependent on the availability of sufficient funds. They will normally include some match-funded components, either from the research organisation or other funding body.

Please read our 'Information for Applicants' for additional information about applying for a grant from Meniere's & Vestibular UK and our terms and conditions of funding before making your application.

Who is eligible to apply

All career levels - junior and established researchers are eligible to apply. You must be based at an UK university or NHS institution and be the Principal Investigator of the project. Your application must have an applicant with a tenured position at the host institution for the duration of the award. This doesn’t have to be the lead applicant.

Applications may also be submitted from equivalent researchers/institutions based outside of the UK.

How much can I apply for?

Applications for large grants over £12,000. There is currently no upper limit, however, applicants should be aware that the Charity’s funds are limited and a preliminary enquiry is recommended to establish whether the project meets Ménière’s & Vestibular UK's criteria and to confirm the charity has available funds to support the project, should funding be approved. If the project does not meet the aims of the charity or where demand on our funds is high, we may be unable to request an application. All requests should be made in £ (GBP).

For grants under £12,000, please visit: Small research grants

When can I apply?

The trustees meet in March, June, September & December. Applications should be submitted by the first day of the month preceding a trustee meeting (e.g. for the March trustee meeting, applications should be received by the charity by 1 February).

How to apply

Step 1 – Preliminary enquiry

  • Applicants should complete the preliminary enquiry form, giving an outline of the project and an idea of the amount of funding requested. To help you prepare your response, you can view the list of questions on the preliminary enquiry form here.
  • The trustees will review the preliminary enquiry to ensure it meets the Charity’s funding criteria and to confirm if funds would be available to support the application if successful.
  • You will be notified the outcome of the trustee review. If the project meets the Charity’s criteria and appropriate funding is available, applicants will be invited to submit a full application – step 2.

Step 2 – Submitting a full application

  • Applicants should complete the Ménière’s & Vestibular UK Major Research Grant Application Form in full, providing a lay summary of the research, full research proposal and any supplementary information to support the application. All major grant applications are subject to independent peer review.

When will I be notified of the outcome of my application?

  • A decision to either progress or reject the application will be made at the trustee meeting following receipt of the application and applicants will be notified by the end of the month of the trustee meeting (e.g. if submitted for a March meeting, you will be notified of the outcome by end of March).
  • Major grant applications which are progressed at this stage will be subject to peer review and are likely to take six months from submission to decision (e.g. if originally submitted for a March meeting but requiring peer review, applicants will receive feedback by either end of June or end of September).
  • Should there be any delays to the application progress, or if there is a delay receiving peer review feedback, the applicant(s) will be notified.
